AI Misconceptions
For this activity, I chose the video “Misconceptions About AI” by Mental Floss. The video explains several common misunderstandings about artificial intelligence and covers several examples for each. With the video being accessible online, only being a few minutes long, and for learners to watch and listen, it provides limited interaction on its own.
Although there is limited built-in interaction, it would be easy to include brief prompts for learners to create interaction after viewing the video. Since AI has become so popular, learners would likely have some knowledge of AI tools and can note misconceptions they have heard before and become curious if what they know is true.
After watching the video, I would ask students to answer a couple of questions, such as picking a misconception about AI that stood out to them and explain why it is important. This would help develop critical thinking and conceptual understanding, because students would need to explain ideas in their own words rather than repeating the information. This activity could be completed on paper, online, or in a blog/discussion post format.
Feedback could come from both peers and the instructor. Students could comment on each other’s posts, and I could give feedback to guide or extend their thinking. I think this would be manageable for both the instructor and students because the activity is short and could still be reasonable in a larger class if peer feedback was included.
The video activity could be more interactive if students could form groups to share their ideas with other peers prior to completing the activity. Additionally to support inclusivity, I could ensure the video has subtitles on and offer a few set questions they could choose from so they can pick questions that they connect with.
